Q: What if a company contacts you for an exam/interview but you were unable to take the message, would it be possible to ask for a reconsideration?

A: This is a question from one of our readers, Carla.

These days, if you miss a job appointment and still wish to pursue your application, you will not lose anything if you choose to send an apology and ask for a reconsideration. Even if you no longer wish to apply, you would be showing good manners by apologizing for skipping a scheduled exam or interview.

It is important to be realistic though. It’s ok to be hopeful that you will still be reconsidered. It is however, wrong to expect that you will immediately be reconsidered for another schedule just because you sent a good apology. Based on experience, many recruiters are too busy to even acknowledge apologies sent.

If you don’t get a response, let it be a lesson to you. As much as possible, as an applicant, have your mobile phone with you at all times even when you are in the comfort room.
